Solar power has long been established as a key component in the transition towards cleaner, cheaper, and more secure energy sources. Recognising this, the UK government has revised its solar targets, aiming to increase solar capacity by nearly fivefold from our current 14GW of generation capacity to 70GW by 2035.

Essex County Council is responsible for over 3,600sqkm of land, 750,000 buildings and in excess of over 1.5 million people. In 2020 the Authority launched a dedicated Essex Climate Action Commission. The Committee released the Essex Climate Action Plan in November 2021, with the aim of making the entire county Carbon Net Zero by 2050.
Geospatial Insight have been selected by Winchester City Council to assess the solar potential of over 600 square kilometres of its non-urban land, in support of the Authority’s ambitions to become carbon neutral by 2024, and their goal for the entire district to become carbon neutral by 2030. The analysis will also include Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA) sites, to enable better decision making about the most beneficial future use of SHELAA locations.
